Dundee 2 Kilmarnock 3: Instant reaction to a crazy win
Matty Kennedy and Bruce Anderson scored as Derek McInnes' side picked up all three points for the first time this season.
Kilmarnock finally picked up their first league victory of the season in unthinkable fashion with a stunning 3-2 comeback against Dundee.
Two goals down after 80 minutes and toiling, Derek McInnes’ side sparked into life during the last 16 minutes of the match, with the goals coming on 86, 88 and 94!
Matty Kennedy scored twice – including the winner – and Bruce Anderson headed home to complete a quite incredible turnaround against the 10 men of Dundee.
For the most part, it was a struggle, even with a man advantage after Mo Sylla’s red card for an elbow on Kennedy in the first period.
Here is the instant reaction to the burning issues at Dens…
Subs save the day
Bruce Anderson, Gary Mackay-Steven and Bobby Wales must take the credit for saving the team’s skin in the City of Discovery.
They were the injection of pace and creativity the team needed to pick up their first domestic victory of the season in almost unimaginable circumstances.
Of course, Kennedy deserves plenty of plaudits for scoring twice, and giving everything for the cause, albeit the first was a howler by the Dundee goalkeeper, but it was the subs who made the crucial difference.
Mackay-Steven dazzled on the wing with his quick feet and crossing ability. I’ll say it again, he needs more game time.
Meanwhile, Anderson produced a fine header at the back post to equalise before Wales’ excellent turn and cut back set up Kennedy for a tap-in to score the winner. Of course, Rory McKenzie and Jack Burroughs deserve mentions for their work too.
This could be a huge moment for Killie, who secured their first league win since May.
As we enter another international break, the timing could hardly have been better as Killie go level with Dundee on six points.
Defensive frailties a major concern
Another game goes by, and there is another error at the back. This time, Robbie Deas was the culprit.
Stuart Findlay’s replacement in the starting XI played a loose pass into midfield which youngster Lyall Cameron was easily able to latch on to.
The Scotland Under-21 international drove towards Killie’s box as he played a delightful reverse pass into Ziyad Larkeche, who had raced up the field from left-back to evade the attention of Danny Armstrong.
His shot arrowed in off the post to give the hosts a 1-0 lead, as Tony Docherty’s side capitalised on yet more shoddy play at the back by Killie.
At the second goal, none of the defence covered themselves in glory either as they were easily outmuscled by Oluwaseun Adewumi, who cooly lifted the ball over Robby McCrorie who was way off his line.
It’s becoming an all too common occurrence for the Ayrshire outfit and they desperately need to cut out these silly mistakes.
Robby McCrorie back in goal
Kieran O’Hara’s mistake for Dundee United’s second goal last weekend proved costly as McInnes opted to select McCrorie from the start this time out.
The former Rangers goalie has been out of the team since picking up a hip injury in the early weeks of the campaign. He last played in the famous away win in Tromsø, with O’Hara retaining his place between the stick even when McCrorie returned to fitness around three weeks ago.
O’Hara had performed reasonably well, and at the very least, showed that he’s capable to playing at Scottish Premiership level as a No.1.
However, last weekend’s mistake led to Dundee United piling on pressure in the latter stages of that game, and well, we all know how it ended.
