Rory McKenzie has never been Kilmarnock's best player but he's always been the player they've needed him to be
If the midfielder has played his last game he'll still be remembered as a club legend
As Joni Mitchell once sang, “you don’t know what you got ‘til it’s gone” and that appears to be very much the sentiment at Kilmarnock over the past couple of days with regard to Rory McKenzie.
The midfielder made just a second league appearance of 2025 against Motherwell on Saturday, starting his first game since a League Cup tie against the same opposition last summer.
McKenzie played well, playing a key role in the opening goal, but was forced off through injury in the second half. Derek McInnes said after the match it didn’t look good, forcing Killie fans to contemplate the idea that it could be the last time they see the 31-year-old in the stripes.
The following day the club announced the stalwart’s long-awaited testimonial, with Wednesday marking 14 years since he made his debut against Inverness.
McKenzie himself once joked that no-one would turn up to his testimonial, but the events of the past week have seen an outpouring of affection for a player who, with his contract up in the summer, may be using that testimonial match as a farewell.
That is, of course, yet to be decided but now seems as good a time as any to reflect on his contribution.
