There was a moment in Kilmarnock’s last home game against Hibs when it seemed the crowd were on the verge of turning on Derek McInnes en masse for the first time in his tenure.

Following the concession of a shambolic opener there were boos from the stand, with a real sense that a second goal would provoke open revolt.

As it happened though the performance was poor, as the manager admitted, a last-gasp equaliser quelled any sense of rebellion.

While there have been grumbles from a minority throughout McInnes’ reign, whether they be related to the style of play or away form, for most there has been an acknowledgement that, over the piece, his reign has been a net positive.

Now though, following a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of St Mirren, the balance may well have tipped the other way.
